Do we like to see our mother language Bangla to be established in Australian education system?

Dear All,
Bangla Proshar Committee, Australia since its inception in 1998 has been endeavouring hard to establish Bangla in NSW Education System. As a result Saturday School of Community Languages (SSCL) of NSW will start Bangla course from 2006 for Yr 7-10 students. The schedule and other information for this course are as follows:
Enrolment process will start in September this year. SSCL will include Bangla in its list of languages for 2006 in the Enrolment Information Booklet that is to be circulated to all schools in Term 3 of 2005.

  • Bangla classes will be held at SSCL’s Dulwich Hill High School Centre every Saturday from February 2006.
  • The minimum number of students to start this course for the 1st year is 10. But the number of interested students must be 30 to get Bangla to be accredited for SSC in 2007.
  • If this figure lasts for at least three years, Bangla can be accredited for NSW HSC in 2008 and its currently suspended status in Australian National Curriculum will be resumed.
Now it is a great challenge to all of us to establish Bangla in Australian Education System. This task can not be successful without your cooperation. Let us take this challenge as the most priority one.

We are all Australian but Bangalee too. Let us uphold this identity with pride.

ENCOURAGE YOUR CHILDREN TO LEARN BANGLA AT HIGH SCHOOL FROM 2006 AND LET IT BE THEIR BELOVED LANGUAGE.
Register your child(ren)’s name in BPC’s interest list today.

Time: 4pm
Venue: NSW Department of Education and Training (DET), 3a Smalls Road Ryde 2112
Agenda and outcome:
The Bangla Prosar Committee had a very successful meeting with the K - 12 Curriculum Director of the NSW Department of Education and Training on 22nd February 2005.
The followings are the outcomes of the meeting:

  • Bangla Syllabus for HSC is nationally recognised and updated in Australia, but it is suspended at the moment. It can be reactivated earliest in 2008 if SSCL students' number sustainably and continually remains 30 or above.

AGM 2004

Venue: Glenfield Community Centre, Cnr Railway Pde and Salisbury Ave, Glenfield, NSW
Date: 4th December 2004

In the Annual General Meeting held at Glenfield Community Hall on 4th December 2004, Bangla Prosar Committee has formed a new 15 members Executive Committee with the following office bearers and members:

  • President: Mr. Abdul Jalil
  • Vice President: Dr. Maksudul Bari
  • Treasurer: Dr. Swapan Paul
  • Secretary: Mr. Farouk Iqbal
  • Members:
    1. Dr. Fazlur Rahman
    2. Mr. Nazrul Islam
    3. Mrs. Samsia Solaiman
    4. Mr. Fida-ul Haq
    5. Mr. Nehal Bari
    6. Mr. Rafuqul Hasan
    7. Mr. Abdul Wahab
    8. Mr. Masood Chowdhury
    9. Mr. Yunus Syed
    10. Ms. Lily Gomage
    11. Mr. M.N. Farid

The AGM has decided the following strategic directions and sought active cooperation from the community members to achieve them.

  1. The BPC should locate some high schools which will be approached to incorporate Bangla in their school curriculum. The committee would provide the resources to develop a draft syllabus framework for submission to NSW Board of Studies and other logistic supports to those schools who agree to run the course.

  2. Taking the instance of Eastlake and Matraville Public Schools, BPC can approach more public schools particularly in Campbelltown, Parramatta and Blacktown areas to include Bangla as a second language.

  3. To make the above approach effective BPC could organize parents meeting in respective areas.

  4. In addition BPC should organize some unique programs to build community awareness about itself.

  5. BPC should take steps to revive the currently inactive Bangla Schools.

  6. Apart from the above activities, BPC will continue pursuing its primary agenda of inclusion of Bangla as LOTE in HSC.
